The MYS staff has put together a week-long program of musical work, fun, and learning to challenge our young musicians.


Ever wondered how bands jam or people make things up without sheet music? Then take intro to music improvisation. In this class you will learn the basics of how to improvise music on your instrument…no sheet music required!

The 2017 MYS Summer Music Camp will be held June 26th through the 30th, 8:00am to 3:00pm on the grounds of Trinity Church located at 2130 E. University Dr, in Mesa (just east of Gilbert Rd).

There will be a free concert on Friday, June 30th at 6:30pm.

Enrollment is open to all string & band students through the 9th grade (students completing the 9th grade this year are eligible).

Students who are not presently members of MYS will audition prior to enrollment - full-day strings and winds/brass/percussion (half-day/mini-camp participants need not audition). The auditions will be held June 14th, June 16th, and June 22nd (only 16th & 22nd for winds/brass/percussion) at the MYS office at 49 W. 1st St in Mesa, starting at 3:00pm and will consist of a short selection of the student’s choice (no accompaniment needed), scales appropriate for the musician’s level, and short sight-reading excerpt. Your specific audition date/time will be emailed to you by June 9th.

Karalee Hagen began her work with Metropolitan Youth Symphony in 2006, as Conductor of Division I. Having taught elementary general music and strings, junior high, and high school orchestra, she has acquired 25+ years of teaching experience. In addition to her teaching, Mrs. Hagen recently accepted the position of Executive Director for MYS.

Mrs. Hagen received her Bachelor of Music Education Degree in K-12 Vocal and Instrumental music from Kansas State University. She completed her Master’s Degree in Conducting at West Texas A&M University in 1993.

As a double bassist, Mrs. Hagen performed with orchestras in Kansas, Texas and Arizona, was coordinator and chair of AZ Bass Jam – a workshop for bass students and educators - for 18 years, and served as a member of the Executive Board of Directors of the AZ Bass Players.

Her ensembles’ successes in Arizona have given her the opportunity to work with numerous elementary, junior high and high school honor groups as a clinician, and as past conductor at the NAU Summer Music Camps. Other contributions to music in the state of Arizona include serving as ABODA Vice President. Currently Mrs. Hagen is the Arizona Music Educators’ Association, President Elect.
